Ruth Roman is the youngest child born to Lithuanian and Jewish parents Mary Pauline Gold (Gold) and Abraham Roman in Lynn, Massachusetts. Her father, a carnival barker, passed away at the age of a tiny girl, requiring her mother to help support the family by being an attendant and a cleaner. Ruth went to school and grew up in poverty within Boston Massachusetts the tenement districts. After only two school years the young woman left to pursue an acting career. The path she chose was not without obstacles. In New York, her first task was to pose stills in crime magazines. acting work she longed for was not available. Then, she worked as a hat check girl at a night club before calling her quits and relocating to Boston. It was the New England Repertory Company was the first position she held as a regular actor. The company paid her performing during the daytime working as an Usherette. Drama studies led her to earn her degree at Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
